Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out at ami@brookspsychology.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Face to face appointments happen in Warrington. Go to the 'contact' section for the address, a map, and images of the clinic space.

During our free 20 minute telephone or video consultation, I will ask you a bit about why you have sought out therapy for yourself or your child, and find out what you are hoping to gain from seeing a psychologist. I will give you an opportunity to ask any questions about myself or my approach. You won't be put on the spot to decide if you would like to book a session. I will share with you my contact details, and you can get in touch if you would like to book in. If I do not feel like I am the right fit for you or your child, I can help you find a clinician with the right skills and experience.

At the beginning of the appointment, I will introduce myself and explain my role. I will discuss confidentiality and explain to your child the purpose of the appointment. I will do my best to put them at ease, and will explain they are free to move around as much as needed and help themselves to any of my fidget and sensory toys. I will then give them the opportunity to continue the appointment with their parent/carers present, or to kick the adults out. Most often, carers will be invited back in at the end of the session to share what we have done.

Psychologists hold a doctoral degree in psychology and provide therapy and assessment services. Psychiatrists hold a medical degree and are trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders with medications, in addition to sometimes providing therapy. As a psychologist, I do not offer pharmacological treatment.

I understand that life can get in the way of scheduled appointments and I try to be as flexible as possible. We ask that you provide us with at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Otherwise, you may be charged a cancellation fee, which covers the cost of room hire and overheads for the session.
